American Red Cross and Nashville Predator blood drives scheduled for Feb. 21-25

Nashville, TN- The American Red Cross continues its partnership with the Nashville Predators Foundation to hold a blood drive in several cities from February 21-25.

All donors in attendance will receive a Predators foam hockey puck while supplies last. All donors in attendance will be automatically entered into a draw to win a puck with the official American Red Cross logo signed by a current Nashville Predators player from each blood drive location.

The American Red Cross continues to experience a nationwide blood donation crisis, and donors of all blood types — especially type O and those who donate platelets — are urged to make an appointment to donate now.

“We continue to see blood shortages increase over the winter months and we are now facing a donation crisis here in Tennessee and nationally as fewer people come to donate,” Clif said. Redish, acting regional director of donor services for the Tennessee Red Cross. Valley Blood Services Region. “We are looking for all healthy and eligible donors to make an appointment today to donate.”

We haven’t seen donations drop like this in over a decade and it is straining hospitals in our area to provide much needed blood to patients in need. We are grateful that our partners, the Nashville Predators, are always there to help our community when called upon and to make such a historic impact for the needs of our region is significant and disastrous,” Redish said.

Eighty percent of the blood donated to the Red Cross comes from blood donations made at blood drives. The organization supplies 40% of the blood across the country.

how to donate blood

Just download the Red Cross Blood Donation Appto visit RedCrossBlood.orggodfather code: PREDS19 or call 1.800.RED CROSS (1.800.733.2767) or activate the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to book an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply to patients.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. People who are 17 years old in most states (16 years old with parental consent where state law permits), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 and under must also meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time on their next donation by using RapidPass® fill out their reading and health history questionnaire online before the donation, on the day of the donation, before coming to the collection. To get started, follow the instructions on RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor app.

Sickle cell donors

At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross is also reviewing all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This additional screening will provide black donors with additional insight into health and help the Red Cross more quickly identify compatible blood types to help patients with sickle cell disease.

Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for people with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from people of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fight sickle cell disease.

Donors can expect to receive sickle cell trait test results, if available, within one to two weeks via the Red Cross Blood Donor App and online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

Safety of blood drives

The health and safety of everyone involved in Red Cross blood drives across the country is a priority, especially as COVID-19 cases rise again. Thus, the Red Cross began to demand all blood donors, staff and others at our blood drives and donation centers to wear face masks, regardless of their vaccination status.

To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that people who feel unwell or who suspect they may have COVID-19 postpone their donation.

People who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can still donate blood and platelets. Knowing the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine they are receiving is important in determining eligibility to donate blood.
