APSU Men’s Tennis Shows Solid Play in Cumberland – Clarksville Online

Lebanon, TN – Freshman Sota Minami was perfect in his college debut, earning a pair of singles and doubles victories in the Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s tennis opener against Cumberland, Tuesday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Tennis Courts.

Minami and fellow freshman Aeneas Schaub paired up to earn their victory as governors in a 7-6 win over Cumberland’s German Suarez and Julian Parada. The two went on to earn their first singles victories in straight sets, with Minami winning 6-3, 7-5 and Schaub winning 6-4, 6-4.

Freshman Javier Tortajada also picked up his first collegiate singles victory in APSU’s opener against CU, winning a pair of sets 6-2. Sophomore Giovanni Becchis capped the Govs opener with a three-set victory over Cumberland’s Pavel Kelo.

Becchis and second Tom Bolton picked up their first win together of the fall in a 6-3 win in the second game of the day. The duo finished second on the team last year with seven doubles wins.

Minami teamed up with senior Thiago Nogueira, earning a 6-4 win. Becchis, Minami, Bolton and Tortajada picked up straight-set wins to wrap up the first gubernatorial action of the fall.

Next step for APSU men’s tennis

Minami, Bolton and Becchis of the Austin Peay State University men’s golf team travel to Charleston, South Carolina for the pre-qualifying round of the US Championships. The trio are the first APSU Govs to appear in the tournament since Christian Edison and Almantas Ozelis in 2017.
