Area cross-country runners dig hard at Claremore meet

Runners from Bartlesville, Dewey, Wesleyan Christian and Oklahoma Union fill the course

Bartlesville High School’s women’s varsity cross country team was elusive and the junior varsity team was just perfect in a blistering display at the Claremore meet last week.

The Bruins raced to fourth place in the varsity boys race and the Bruin college team went to the tag team championship to highlight some of Bartlesville’s other highlights.

Three other area schools – Dewey, Wesleyan Christian School and Oklahoma Union – also participated.

Below are brief summaries of each regional team’s performance. At the bottom are the complete or partial results of all the teams.

BARTLESVILLE VARSITY GIRLS: Gentry Turner came in October like a lion chasing breakfast. The Lady Bruins’ No. 1 runner put in a blurry performance, breaking the 19-minute barrier for the second time this week to claim the championship with a time of 18:59.3. (Less than a week earlier, she had set a personal best at the super competitive Chili Pepper race in Arkansas.) She won the Claremore race by more than 40 seconds. That second-place leader was her Lady Bruin teammate Emily Lechuga (19:39.95). In fact, Bartlesville places five runners in the Top 10 – Katherine Manley (8th, 21:05.06), Lauren Shoesmith (9th, 21:06.14) and Reese Savage (10th, 21:09.53). Emma Perry and Rachael Landers completed the team. David Ayres is Bartlesville’s cross country head coach for boys and girls.

BARTLESVILLE VARSITY BOYS: Two top-20 finishes propelled the Bruins to fourth in the team standings. Tehi Chibitty moved up to 12th place (17:52.82) and Tanner John to 19th (18:02.35). The other three fastest Bruins were Russell Miller (31st, 18:32.25), Kayden Reyes (49th, 19:07.31) and Reed Gorman (56th, 19:19.32). Jackson Boudreaux and Ashton Lindsay-Brothers finished sixth and seventh for Bartlesville.

VARSITY DEWEY BOYS: Scott Horton moved up to 36th place (18:44.96) to lead Dewey to 13th place. Daniel Jones came next (72nd, 20:15.66), followed by Clayton Evans (77th, 20:26.45), Caleb Whitson (83rd, 20:43.43) and Cooper Eutsler (97th, 22:37.78).

DEWEY VARSITY GIRLS: Tania Salinas climbed to 12th place (13:59.26), followed by Izzy Perry (36th, 15:50.68).

OKLAHOMA UNION BOYS: The Cougars were led by Nicolas Jackson (50th, 19:08.35). Braden Green (24:18.15), James Bottoms (24:19.65), Jack Campos (24:45.07) ranked next for the Cougars.

BARTLESVILLE JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS: Perfection is a rare achievement in the jumble of human flaws in athletic competition. But, the Lady Bruins literally couldn’t have done better – they were perfect. That’s because they swept the top five spots (top eight spots, actually) to record the lowest possible team score in cross country – 15. For the unknown, the score of the cross-country team is calculated by adding the places of the top five in the team – one point for a first place, eight points for an eighth place, 38 points for a 38th place, etc. In other words, like in golf, the lowest score wins. If a team places its riders in the first five places, the team score is 15 (one point for first, two points for second, three points for third, four points for fourth and five points for fifth). Although a full team has seven riders, only the top five places count towards the team total. For clarity, there may be a difference between a runner’s place and team points, as some teams will see their sixth and seventh runners finish ahead of some of the top five runners from other teams. For accuracy, the document shows the actual place a rider finished, not the team points he received (a rider may finish 20th overall, but his team points are 18, for two sixth places, or sixth and seventh places the placers of other schools came before them). It’s a long lap of the block to give more details on Bartlesville’s incredible and flawless performance – Maryann Alvey (1st, 20:43.79), Kaitlyn Taylor (2nd, 23:35.56), Olivia Ontiveros (3rd, 23:44.31 ), Hailey Taylor (4th, 24:17.01) and Kailey Malcom (5th, 24:20.0). Arin Bailey (6th), Kara Stose (7th) and Raina Jones (8th) also finished in the top 10. More results appear towards the bottom of the article.

BARTLESVILLE JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS: Jesse Espinal-Cruz finished fourth (19:11.23) to lead the Bruins to fourth place as a team. Cade Winter came in 10th (19:51.9). Bartlesville’s other top five finishers were: Ben Zilenski (17th, 20:13.24), Chris Laxson (20th, 20:23.07) and Nathan Beckloff (24th, 20:30.12).

DEWEY JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS: Tre Hicks threw some good kicks to finish 50th (22:27.85), followed by Kooper Crawford (22:37.92), Lathe Griggs (23:30.92) and Karson Johnson (24:24.53).

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS: Leo Williams finished 14th (20:05.14) to lead the Mustangs, followed by Isaac Valenzuelaaramburo (22:31.6), Kaden Week (23:16.14) and Jarrett Jenson (23:53.32).

BARTLESVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS: The younger Lady Bruins stormed into second place, led by four Top 15 finishers. They included Maci Alleman (6th, 13:22.45), Madilyn Malcom (12th, 13:48.1), Isabella Prentice (13th, 14 : 05.03) and Emma Kuntz (14th, 14:05.54). Karli Serratos summed up the team’s top five (17th, 14:11.06). Taylor Bradford and Eliza Miller rounded out the seven fastest Lady Bruins.

BARTLESVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS: The Bruins put together an incredible team score (31) to claim the crown. Wesley Turner won the individual championship (11:31.62), followed by Jesus Gaytan-Lopez (4th, 11:47.26), DaVion Broch (6th, 11:58.23), Michael Taylor (8th, 12:00.96) and Preston Shoesmith ( 12, 12:11.93). Sutton Huff and Lincoln Pulsifer then crossed the line for the Bruins.
