2021 New Jersey International Film Festival interviews with Paradise director Immanuel Esser Sat, 12 Jun 2021 12:04:37 +0000

By Al Nigrin

paradise Airing the video on demand on Saturday, June 12 as part of the 2021 New Jersey International Film Festival. Here is my text-based interview with Paradise director Immanuel Esser.

Nigrin: paradise is an existential sci-fi feature film that focuses on the three workers employed by the “Styx” company where they drive from place to place taking people out, packing them up and firing them. Tell us why did you decide to make this film?

Rise: I am damaged property because I grew up in a philosopher’s house (my parents teach philosophy at university and I also studied philosophy before going to film school). there were many incidents that led to this project, but the basic framework of a thought experiment (a very philosophical way of looking at the world), which builds a fairly contemporary fiction and close to our reality and at the same time there are very fundamental differences with our world is something that interests me in art in general. In 1896, Hugo Simberg painted a watercolor entitled IN THE GARDEN OF DEATH. Three mowers in black dresses fulfill the dark expectations of the title. But the peculiarity of this little work lies in the way in which they pursue the peaceful and secular activity of gardening. They are sympathetic, but do not lose their status as memento mori. In this way, Simberg stimulates an examination of our mortality, which I believe is worth exploring. With PARADISE, we approach the dark theme of death in this playful sense. We believe that the absurd is an important way of thinking and can be used successfully to address existential questions. In cinematic terms: Looking at another fictional, stylized world and how it deals with this inevitable end of our physical being, we sometimes recognize unexpected parallels and caricatures of our own world. In PARADISE, we accompany three protagonists on this mental and physical journey, facing each other and their own mortality. We are finding structural similarities with our own society’s efforts to control the dying process by confining it to hospital beds accompanied by the administration of drugs. And the emptiness and artificiality of their world, which initially contrasts sharply with our world, becomes the lens of a reflective vision of current developments in the world of work.

Nigrin: The three main actors Franziska Machens in Moris, Holger Daemgen in Grundt, Johannes Kühn in Kraumann are really perfect. Tell us about them and how they ended up in your film?

Rise: Thank you! I love all three of them and their performances were great, yes. We took our time and many takes to make them perfect. While looking for them, we met a lot of actors and actresses. I hadn’t known any of the three before (although they became friends in the process). It was a normal casting process. Sorry to disappoint – no big stories, only a lot of work. 🙂

Nigrin: The camera work of DP Philipp Künzli is really awesome. Tell us about him and the cinematic style used in your film?

Rise: I had done a few short films already and knew this was going to be the basic visual grammar of the film. And then Philipp and I went on tour. We took a lot of photos for weeks and we had a big wall in our production office with the prints of the photos and the script pages and we started to think. Most of the wide shots you see in the movies have already been taken in the form of photographs and on this wall. (Opposite that wall was the wall from renate, our production designer – with all the photos of the objects that would be part of the movie. So we built most of the color concepts and visual aesthetics there, simultaneously)

Nigrin: Where did you shoot your film and why did you choose these locations?

Rise: We shot most of it (apart from the night scenes and a few special places like the lake and the lime works scene) in the area between East and West Germany. it is an area that is not very constructed and at the same time very geometric in terms of street construction and tree planting. and it seemed appropriate to me to shoot this experimental film in an intermediate zone with so much history around it.

Here is my video interview The director of Paradis Emmanuel Esser:

Paradise will be screened with two incredible shorts The Dark Odyssey and Space Case Video on Demand this Saturday, June 12 as part of the 2021 New Jersey International Film Festival.

But when Bobbie’s ticket to a new life is stolen by her super preppy sister, she’s forced to follow a compliance path, to be part of the town’s beauty pageant! will she comply? Or will she endorse and follow her dreams! 2020; 18 minutes

Paradis – Emmanuel Esser (Cologne, Germany) For the three employees of the “Styx” company, it is an everyday affair: living in the company van and driving by land to get from a place and time of death to the other – eliminate people, pack them up and send them back. They lead a monotonous life doing their daily chores for a society that has developed a pain-free system for the deaths of people. Suddenly, the three find themselves faced with their own ending and begin to question and bend the rules of their world. In German, with subtitles. 2021; 80 minutes.
