Don’t let religion divide us, Sanwo-olu urges Nigerians

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged Nigerians not to allow religious division, especially regarding the Muslim-Muslim APC ticket for the presidential poll.

Sanwo-Olu gave the advice Thursday in Ikoyi, during the 96th anniversary conference of the Yoruba Tennis Club, on the theme: “The social club and the pursuit of national cohesion”.

He said electing the next President of Nigeria should be a matter of leadership, character, boldness of thought and the ability to think deeply and solve problems.

According to him, electing the right people is not about religion, as there is nothing in issuing a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the APC presidential candidacy.

“I am a Christian and my wife is a Christian but we know too well that it is not about religion.

“We forgot that in 2011 when the Action Congress gave a platform to Malam Nuhu Ribadu and his running mate then was Mr. Fola Adeola.

“It was a joint Muslim-Muslim ticket and we didn’t see any problems at that time.

“But suddenly, because there’s a chance that this ticket will come out a winner, people now want to divide us. We’ll say no because that’s not who we are.

“It’s a matter of leadership. It’s about character. It’s about daring to think. It is the ability to be able to think deeply and solve problems.

“We don’t want to despair the other candidates. We all know too well what their background is. We all also know what their credentials are. But we know that as a nation we need a strong launch pad. We have to think outside the box and be able to do our best,” he said.

The Governor commended the Yoruba Tennis Club management for making the right choice to invite APC Vice Presidential candidate Senator Kashim Shettima as a guest speaker.

“We are now celebrating 96 years and let it be recorded that by 2026, when we celebrate our centenary, by the grace of God, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will come here to celebrate our centenary as president.

“By your grace and support, I will always remain your 15th governor, coming here and celebrating in four years and you will all be here.

“We deserve the presidency. In Lagos, we deserve it. Lagos demands it and it would be by the grace of God a bigger, better and stronger nation and state that you would all be truly proud to have been a part of,” he said.

In his lecture, APC vice-presidential candidate Senator Kashim Shettima said there had been so much talk about the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Shettima said Senator Tinubu is a Muslim, but his wife is not only a Christian but also a senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

“Some of Asiwaju’s children are Christians. How can you convince someone that Asiwaju is going to Islamize Nigeria when he has not Islamized his own family? “, did he declare.
