One of the great thinkers in Church history was an African bishop named Augustine. In his infamous book “The Confessions”, Augustine wrote this prayer, “Command [O God] what you want, and give what you command. What was this theological titan praying to? Simply that God always provides what He commands to His people.

The question is then posed to us: what does God require of his people? In a sense, we could simply take the whole Bible as clear testimony to God’s requirements, whether by observation (which we call “descriptive”) or by command (which we call “prescriptive”). It is in this last category that we find some of the brightest lights of the Lord Himself. Today we consider Jude 3, “Beloved, though I was very anxious to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you calling you to strive for the faith… ” (ESV)
