Group of Muslim scholars advise critics of same-faith presidential ticket

THE Concerned Yoruba Muslim Scholars in Nigeria (CONYORMS) have risen to defend the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to nominate two Muslims, Senators Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, as candidates for the 2023 presidential election.

CONYORMS, at a press conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, addressed by its Chairman General, Sheikh Abdulrasheed Mayaleke, urged critics to refrain from opposing the composition of the party’s ticket to the power but to instead focus on the “unassailable skills” of Tinubu and Shettima.

He also described the choice of the two former governors as “the most appropriate and well-deserved”.

The group justified its position by citing some states where Nigerians were or are ruled by Christian governors and deputy governors with no objection from Muslims.

According to the group, a former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a Christian, had a Christian deputy in the person of Chief (Ms) Olusola Obada and Muslims in the state did not complain.

CONYORMS said the outgoing Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, a Christian, has a Christian MP.

He added that the governor-elect of the state, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, who is a Christian, also has a Christian MP.

CONYORMS said they were shocked by the criticism that followed Shettima’s choice as Tinubu’s running mate.

Mayaleke, flanked by Professor Abideen Olaiya, Dr Dawud Amoo Alaga, Sheikh Abdulfatai Sanni, Mr Abdulwaheed Olowonjaye and Mr Abdulganiy Sahid Olaide added that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has a Christian like deputy but that the Muslims in the state were not complaining.

He said: “Concerned Yoruba Muslim scholars in Nigeria are alarmed by the hypocritical public outcry from a section of Christian leaders and supporters against the choice of Senator Kashim Shettima as Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running mate for the 2023 presidential election. .

“Unfortunately, people who are supposed to be moral guides for a united and prosperous nation have now become agents of opposition parties.

“We are deeply shocked by the extent of prejudice expressed by opposition parties posing as different names or groups.

“It is therefore imperative to remind and enlighten well-meaning Nigerians of the potential of these great candidates with unassailable skills.

“At this juncture, Concerned Yoruba Muslim Scholars of Nigeria find it imperative to affirm that Kashim Shettima’s choice as Tinubu’s running mate is most appropriate and well deserved.”
