High School Sports: Local cross-country runners face off in South O’Brien (10/3/22)

PAULLINA — Cross-country racers from Gehlen Catholic, Hinton, MMCRU and Remsen St. Mary’s competed at the Paullina Golf Course Thursday at a meet hosted by South O’Brien.


MMCRU took second place in the team standings. The Royals had two of the top five in the race. Kaden Wales finished third overall with a time of 17:04.61. The IATC Class 1A ranked No. 18 rider wasn’t too far behind the top two. Lane Henrichs of George-Little Rock/Central Lyon, the #28 ranked rider in Class 2A, won the race in 16:53.18. Parker Duitsman of Estherville-Lincoln Central finished second in the field of 72 riders with a time two and a half seconds behind the winner.

About a minute passed between the top three and the next wave of runners. MMCRU’s Owen Alesch was fourth with a time of 17:59.70, finishing about a second ahead of Hinton’s Caleb Bower who crossed the finish line in 18:00.88. Hinton capped the top 10 with a Zach Sypersma finish as he finished in 18:10.12. Two places behind him was Lucas Braun of MMCRU with a time of 18:21.68.

The next local runner was MMCRU’s Wyatt Alesch as he was 19th with a time of 18:39.56. The last runner for the team and the last tally time for the Royals was Max Pepper as he took 65th place in 24:05.78.

Hinton’s last two times came by Ian Greigg (50th, 20:28.30) and Carson Sudbeck (62nd, 21:48.75) as the Blackhawks were one fumble away from a team score.

Gehlen Catholic finished seventh out of 10 full teams competing. Nolan Teel led the Jays with a 24th time of 18:54.02. Just over two seconds later, teammate Braden Weber finished 29th as part of a tight group of riders who all finished with times in the 18:56 range. He was just 0.01 seconds off 28th place and 0.03 seconds off 27th place.

Robert Schmit hit 19:19 on the nose to take 35th in the race. About a minute later Gehlen’s next runner finished as Landen Kneip took 46th in 20:16.58. Owen Seivers was the team’s last runner, finishing 49th in 20:26.30.

No local runners finished in the top 10, but Hinton had the top two spots outside the top 10. The Blackhawks had the first two after the 22-minute mark as Kadence Peters finished in 22:07, 53 and Kaci Allen ran a time of 22:12.11. Her teammate Kyra Peters finished 18th with a time of 22:55.13. Haley Jarvis was the only other Hinton runner to finish, finishing 44th in 25:34.61.

Gehlen Catholic’s best time was 23:27.33 from Addison Arens as she finished 27th. Danielle Tesch was 51st in 26:59.51 and Samantha Zubrod was 59th in 31:49.81 as two other runners from Gehlen.

Remsen St. Mary’s had a runner in the race. McKenna Loutsch clocked 24:17.38 to finish 35th.

None of the local schools had enough participants to be included in the team ranking.

George-Little Rock/Central Lyon took the team title behind a time of 20:41.59 for first place finisher Mary Schriever, the 22nd ranked girl in class 2A.
