Monkey Giving CPR actually recreates the classic scene “The Sandlot”

A monkey once considered a hero has since been determined to have been, well, just make monkeys.

Recently, images of an African monkey performing CPR on a friend circulated the internet. You could hear the collective “Aw! That people saw what they wanted to see: a altruistic monkey with a heart of gold, performing word-of-mouth on another mammal.

But for any red-blooded man obsessed with classic ’90s baseball comedy The sandy ground, the scene seemed suspicious. Who doesn’t remember the boy-centric part of the movie where Squints pretends to drown in the local pool so that lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn dives in, drags him onto dry land and performs CPR on him? It’s the most memorable scene in the movie (and one that doesn’t hold up well in today’s #MeToo climate).

That’s why we’re not surprised that the photographer who captured the primary images is now backtracking what they actually reveal.

At first, William Steel, the photographer who photographed the couple in the Gaborone Game Reserve in Botswana, thought the female was looking for attention. He saw her fall “dramatically” and thought she was trying to manipulate the male monkey. Now he’s convinced the male monkey was taking advantage of a vulnerable female while she was lying on the ground with her limbs spread. The male monkey was not saving his life so much as stealing a kiss.

All we have to say is: typical. Dude, could you be more cliché? Someone has to educate the animal kingdom with their consent.
