Red Planet Pictures Sells Majority Stake to Asacha Media | Large companies | Business | New

In a deal supposed to boost the ability of one of the UK’s leading fiction producers to produce the highest quality fiction for UK, European and international audiences, the new European drama-focused group Asacha Media Group (AMG) acquired Red Planet Pictures.
Red Planet Pictures is best known for the recurring ratings of Death in Paradise (pictured), one of the BBC’s top performing international shows, sold in over 230 territories. The Planet company was founded in 2006 by Tony Jordan, responsible for writing 250 episodes of EastEnders before creating the hit series Life on Mars and Hustle. He was joined soon after at Red Planet by Deputy Managing Directors Belinda Campbell and Alex Jones. Campbell created and still oversees Death in Paradise and is responsible for the development and executive production of period drama Sanditon, as well as the national thriller Our House.

In 2021 he will be one of the UK’s top performing drama producers not only with the eleventh season of Death in Paradise for BBC1, but also seasons 2 and 3 of Sanditon, for BritBox and PBS Masterpiece, one of Masterpiece’s top performing shows in 2020, as well as Our House for ITV, adapted from the 2019 winner of Crime & Thriller at the British Book Awards – a total of 25 episodes.

Asacha is the new European drama-focused television production group founded by Marina Williams, Gaspard de Chavagnac and Marc Antoine D’Halluin with drama labels in France, Italy and Spain, and British factual producer Wag, bought in February 2021. It is backed by private equity firm, Oaktree Capital. Explaining the rationale for her purchase, Asacha said she was seeing a growing demand for high-quality UK scripts and UK co-productions across Europe, which she said created significant additional opportunities for Red Planet and in part of his group. As part of the Jordan transaction, Campbell and Jones will reinvest part of their revenues in Asacha Media Group, in line with Asacha’s other European partners.

In a joint statement on the transaction, de Chavagnac and Williams said: “One year on from the launch of Asacha Media Group, we are delighted to further strengthen our presence in the UK by acquiring Red Planet Pictures. Under the leadership of Tony, Belinda and Alex, the Red Planet team have achieved an outstanding record of producing hits that captivate a global audience. This acquisition will strengthen our ability to serve major platforms around the world and is another important step in AMG’s roadmap to become a leading European content provider. become one of the main European content providers.

Campbell and Jones added, “In Asacha, we have found a partner with whom we can pursue our ambitions in producing high quality popular drama that resonates on the global stage. By working with Marina and Gaspard, we will not only benefit from a wider network throughout the EMEA region and beyond, but also from like-minded creators and the extended AMG family for exciting co-production opportunities. We look forward to exciting times to come.
