RMAC Cross Country Championships are coming to Durango – The Durango Herald

The Fort Lewis College men’s and women’s cross country teams will host a pair of competitions at Hillcrest Golf Club this fall, including the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on Nov. 5.

Before considering the postseason racing buzz, the Skyhawks will focus their attention on the season-opening George Kyte Classic on Sept. 3. The meet will take place at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, Arizona and is hosted by Northern Arizona University. Then teams will make the short drive to Alamosa for the 29th annual Joe I. Vigil Invitational on Sept. 10 at Cattails Golf Course.

Fort Lewis will then head to the 12th Annual MSU Denver Roadrunners Invitational on Sept. 17 at Washington Park in Denver.

Finally, the blue and gold will return home for the Tom Strandt Memorial race at Hillcrest Golf Club on October 7. It will be a full day of racing with middle school, high school and college programs all competing. The men’s collegiate 8K is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and the women’s collegiate 5K will follow at 4:30 p.m.

The group’s final tune-up before the championship season will take place Oct. 15 at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, Calif.

The Skyhawks will return to Durango after a brief rest to host the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship. The action will take place at Hillcrest with 15 teams racing in both men’s and women’s. It will be a treat for all in attendance as RMAC regularly features some of the best talent in the country, including the reigning Women’s National Champion from Adams State and nine other men’s and women’s teams that have finished in the national top 10 the season. last.

After the conference, qualified athletes will embark on the hunt for national titles at the NCAA Regional Championships on Nov. 18 and the NCAA DII National Championships on Dec. 3.

Volleyball to start on the road

Trips to Silver City, New Mexico and Lubbock, Texas will mark the start of the 2022 season for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team before a flurry of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games wins the team in November and a hopeful run to the playoffs.

The Skyhawks finished 6-16 in 2021 while going 6-12 in the RMAC. The team was 5-4 at Whalen Gymnasium with three of the wins in five sets.

At the Western New Mexico Tournament on August 26-27, the Skyhawks will face the host school, WNMU, University of Wisconsin Parkside and Cal State East Bay.

The following week, the Skyhawks will flock to Lubbock, Texas for the Lonestar Tournament and take on Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Lubbock Christian University and Texas Permian Basin to wrap up their non-conference schedule.

Fort Lewis will next play its conference opener at New Mexico Highlands on September 6.

FLC will kick off its home competitions on a newly redesigned gymnasium floor on September 10 against MSU Denver. The following week will see a rare Tuesday/Friday slate against Western Colorado University and Regis University on September 13-16.

The blue and gold will then hit the road for four matches in three states, taking on Chadron State College on September 23, Colorado School of Mines on September 24, Colorado Mesa University on September 30 and Westminster College on October 1.

The remainder of October will feature four home games and four road games, with FLC hosting CSU Pueblo on October 7, UCCS on October 8, Westminster on October 21 and Mesa on October 22.

FLC will also play South Dakota Mines on October 14, Black Hills State on October 15, CCU on October 28, and MSU Denver on October 28.

FLC next hosts Adams State for a Nov. 4 showdown before its Nov. 5 senior night against NMHU.

The RMAC tournament is scheduled to begin on November 10 with the high seed hosting games.
