Snowflake Unveils New Performance Innovations and Enhanced Cross-Cloud Capabilities

Snowflake has introduced performance enhancements that make the product faster for all customers, along with economic enhancements. Additionally, Snowflake’s Snowgrid technology enables customers to operate globally with enhancements in cross-cloud collaboration.

Snowflake announced during its Data Cloud World Tour new innovations for its Snowflake data cloud platform that improve economic value for customers. Seamless performance improvements mean Snowflake is faster, and since Snowflake charges on a time/consumption basis, this can result in lower costs and greater value for purchased credits.

Additionally, Snowflake is advancing its cross-cloud Snowgrid capability. It is a technology layer that interconnects clouds and regions and powers Snowflake collaboration, data governance, and business continuity. These enhancements enable customers to further streamline collaboration with richer experiences and privacy-preserving controls, automate data protection, and extend the scope of replication for seamless failover.

Performance improvements include:

  • Faster queries: With Query Acceleration Service (now in public preview), Snowflake will accelerate oversized queries by providing a burst of additional resources without the need to increase overall compute. Customers also benefit from improved query efficiency through join elimination (generally available), as well as multiple search optimization improvements for faster searches and point searches.
  • Cost optimization: With new account usage details, customers can more easily run a cost/benefit analysis of services for automatic clustering and search optimization. Specifically, customers will be able to determine the extent and impact of data loads or table changes with new history views (private preview) and lower costs with search optimization taking Now supports column selection (public preview) for search-optimized data. Additionally, customers can now more easily analyze long and time-consuming queries and identify and fix performance issues before they impact the end user with programmatic access to query metrics (private preview).

One customer already seeing the benefits is DoorDash, whose data engineering and business intelligence manager, Vaibhav Jajoo, said, “DoorDash has continued to grow in terms of product innovation and geographic distribution in years. With this growth, our data volumes have exploded. . We are collecting new data points, brainstorming and experimenting with new business ideas, and generating new insights. We were looking for a scalable data infrastructure partner who could “evolve and grow with our growth. Snowflake has proven to be that partner for us. Snowflake has been able to work with us to adapt to our data needs and meet our complex business requirements.”

Cross-cloud collaboration enhancements include:

  • Announcements for private sharing: The new List Discovery Controls (Public Preview) provide granular controls for providers to list data privately, making it easier to share and collaborate internally and externally while maintaining privacy. Providers can customize listings and offer usage-based pricing, while consumers get greater listing visibility with usage and query examples, as well as categorizations.
  • Simplified access to data shared between clouds: Using Cross-cloud auto-fulfillment (public preview), providers can make data immediately accessible and up-to-date for consumers, without manual intervention.
  • Richer usage analytics: Suppliers now have access to robust programmatic and visual insights (public preview) to better understand how listings are viewed and used, helping them deliver improved offers and customer experiences.

Cross-cloud data governance enhancements include:

  • Automated data protection: Tag-based masking (generally available) can automatically assign a designated policy to sensitive columns using tags, strengthening data protection and simplifying the management of large-scale policy changes.
  • Accelerated searches on hidden data: Search optimization now supports tables with masking and row access policies (private preview), so customers can take full advantage of Snowflake performance while maintaining privacy and compliance.

Cross-cloud business continuity enhancements include:

  • Transparent pipeline failover: In addition to replicating accounts, databases, policies, and metadata in Snowflake, customers can now replicate streams and jobs (public preview), so data pipelines can run seamlessly across Snowflake accounts secondary.
  • Simplified configurations: Customers will be able to easily configure, manage, and failover account replication through an intuitive user interface (private preview), including the ability to streamline configurations for sources, destinations, replication objects, and replication intervals.

“Our success is built on our customers’ success when they use Snowflake, which is why we continually strive to deliver improved performance and economic value for customers,” said Christian Kleinerman, senior vice president of product. at Snowflake. “With one product, we can innovate faster and deliver enhancements that enable our customers to have a unified experience across clouds and regions, so they can protect their data at cloud scale, operate more efficiently and collaborate globally in new ways to further mobilize their data.”

ENABLE HYBRID CLOUD AND REDUCE NETWORK LATENCY WHITE PAPER

The hybrid cloud promises to bring together the best of both worlds, allowing businesses to combine the scalability and cost-effectiveness of the cloud with the performance and control you can get from your on-premises infrastructure.

Reducing WAN latency is one of the biggest hybrid cloud performance issues. Leveraging data compression and deduplication can reduce your network latency.

Markets and Markets research firm predicted that the size of the hybrid cloud market is expected to grow from US$38.27 billion in 2017 to US$97.64 billion by 2023.

Colocation facilities offer many benefits of having your servers in the cloud while maintaining physical control of your systems.

The cloud adjacency provided by colocation facilities can allow you to take advantage of their high-bandwidth, low-latency connections to the cloud, as well as provide a solid connection to your on-premises corporate network.
