The American Red Cross needs blood donors

Nashville, TN – Each year on June 14, the American Red Cross joins blood donor organizations around the world in celebrating World Blood Donor Day, which recognizes the importance of a safe and stable blood supply and donors who make it possible.

Nearly 2.5 million people volunteer to donate life-saving blood and platelets every year with the Red Cross. Eligible donors are encouraged to be part of something big by making an appointment to donate blood or platelets this month.

Blood donations dwindle in late spring and early summer — especially during holiday weeks, such as Memorial Day and Independence Day — but the need for blood and platelet transfusions does not take no summer break. Generous blood and platelet donors are critically important to ensuring life-saving care is available when patients need it. To make an appointment to donate, download the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1.800.RED.CROSS (1.800.733.2767).

As a thank you for your help, in honor of Baz Luhrmann’s new movie, Elvis, everyone who comes to give in June will automatically be entered for a chance to win a VIP trip to Graceland for two, including the round-trip airfare to Memphis, plus a three-night stay at The Guest House and a VIP tour of Elvis Entourage, courtesy of Graceland, a custom-wrapped Gibson Epiphone guitar and more.

Additionally, those who come to donate from June 1-30 will also receive a $5.00 e-gift card at a merchant of their choice.*

Health Information for Donors

At a time when health information has never been more important, the Red Cross reviews all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait.

This additional screening will provide black donors with additional insight into health and help the Red Cross more quickly identify compatible blood types to help patients with sickle cell disease. Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for people with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from people of the same race, ethnicity and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fight sickle cell disease.

Donors can expect to receive sickle cell trait test results, if available, within one to two weeks via the Red Cross Blood Donor App and online donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

Safety of blood drives

The Red Cross adheres to high standards of safety and infection control. The Red Cross will continue to socially distance where possible at blood drives, donation centers and facilities. Although donors are no longer required to wear a face mask, individuals may choose to continue wearing a mask for any reason.

The Red Cross will also adhere to more stringent face mask requirements as per national and/or local guidelines, or as requested by blood drive sponsors. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment before arriving at a drive.
