The little-known appearance of the BBC star Death in Paradise in EastEnders in the key script by Phil Mitchell

Back in the hazy haze of 2012, the BBC’s EastEnders experimented with offering special content to users who pressed the red button during episodes.

In some cases, entire episodes with key plot points were hidden behind that unspeakably red futuristic button.

In one case, a key Phil Micthell storyline that revolved around his jail time was picked up for the Red Button treatment – and a star you can recognize from Death in Paradise appeared in it.

The story of the Red Button saw Phil tasked with showing around a young prisoner named Devon (played by Tobi Bakare).

But problems erupted when Devon clashed with prison boss Craig Jenkins (Glenn Doherty), leaving Phil to decide whether or not to step in and help.

“How far is Phil willing to go to save someone else? The red button will definitely reveal everything,” read the EastEnders teaser statement at the time.

Why was Phil in jail anyway? Long after Stella Crawford’s death, Phil was falsely accused of murder by his own son, Ben. Their relationship is complex, you see.
