Twitter’s POTUS account reportedly reset to zero followers when Biden takes over – TechCrunch

In this country, we have a long-standing peaceful transfer of power for the executive office, even following the most hard-fought elections. Certain circumstances have made many wonder if the tradition will continue on January 20. Despite his very vocal protests, however, the current president has agreed to withdraw, if all of his legal maneuvers fail (something that seems anything but a certainty at this point).

There is, of course, nothing in the Constitution that offers advice on the peaceful transition of passwords – strangely, this country’s ancestors did not have the foresight to predict Twitter. The service has previously explained what happens to Trump’s account when he leaves office. Namely, he loses the protections that come with being a political figure.

CEO Jack Dorsey noted this during Congressional hearings last month, saying, “If an account is suddenly no longer a world leader, this particular policy is gone.” But what about the new president? What will the transition look like for Biden? And what if Trump does not voluntarily give up the official @Potus account as has also been suggested?

He wasn’t exactly anxious to accept the results of this election, and he’s not one to voluntarily give up on a platform – especially one with 33 million followers (admittedly a fraction of Trump’s main account) .

Nick Pacilio, of Twitter’s Communications, Government & News team, gave TechCrunch the following statement on this: “Twitter is in talks with Biden’s transition team on a number of aspects related to the transfer of White House account. “

The company, perhaps understandably, didn’t answer the question directly, but working with the inbound team is a fairly straightforward way around any issue of transferring more than a dozen accounts, because The Wall Street Journal notes. As has been reported, existing tweets will be deleted and the incoming administration will start over – a net positive for Team Biden, given the … polarizing nature of the previous president’s news feed.

According to Digital Director of Biden, the POTUS and White House accounts will also be reset to zero subscribers, marking a change from Obama’s transition to Trump. Donald Trump’s personal Twitter account has already lost a prominent follower. Earlier this week, CEO Jack Dorsey did not follow the president, as well as other prominent politicians, including Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
